Illinois Scholars Undergraduate Research (ISUR) Program

2026-2027 ISUR Applications

Applications are now open for the 2026-2027 ISUR cohort!

Application Deadline: Monday, April 13, 2026

    Application Requirements

Students are responsible for identifying and securing a research placement prior to applying. Interested applicants should contact a faculty member to request joining their research group. In most cases, a graduate student will serve as the student’s primary mentor, though faculty members may also directly mentor undergraduate researchers. For more information on getting connected to a research group, see the “Getting Started” section of the Undergraduate Research One Illinois Page.

Applicants must submit a complete application packet as a single PDF file containing the following four components to this application form:

    • 1. Resume

A current resume highlighting academic achievements, relevant coursework, and other applicable activities.

No prior research experience is required for ISUR participation. Consider how previous experiences on your resume prepare you for research. Then, use your resume bullet points to highlight the transferable skills that prepare you to succeed as a researcher.

    • 2. Tentative 2026-2027 Schedule

Make a copy of this spreadsheet to organize your schedule for both the fall and spring semester. If you are not sure about your spring schedule, please list courses you plan to take in the spring term. If you are having trouble accessing the spreadsheet, please create a schedule that shows your planned courses for the 2026-2027 academic year, including class meeting times.

    • 3. Personal Statement (250-300 words)

A brief statement of interest that clearly articulates your goals, preparedness, and enthusiasm for research.

In your statement, please address the following questions:

      • What motivates you to participate in research?
      • What previous non-research experiences prepare you for research?
      • How will ISUR contribute to your development as a researcher and engineer?
      • What do you hope to gain from participating in ISUR?
    • 4. Project Proposal  (1-2 single-spaced pages, excluding references)

A project proposal developed in collaboration with a research group that has agreed to support your work. Your project proposal should be written for a non-specialized audience and include the below sections. You may include illustrative figures, diagrams, or charts as appropriate.

      • Title
      • Introduction/Background: What is currently known, and what gap in current research will your project fill?
      • Goals/Objectives: What specific outcomes does your project aim to produce?
      • Significance/Relevance: Why does this work matter beyond your research group? Who benefits from your research? And how?
      • Methods: How will you collect or generate the data necessary to answer your research questions? How will you analyze or evaluate the results?
      • Proposed Project Timeline (August-April): What major milestones will need to occur in order to successfully complete your project by April 2027?
      • References: Format references in the academic citation style of your choosing.
    • 5. Faculty Confirmation of Student Eligibility (International Students Only)

If you are an international student, please provide written confirmation from your faculty sponsor that their research group does not have citizenship requirements that preclude international student participation.

    Application Evaluation

Applications will be evaluated using a score system based on the following criteria:

    1. Preparedness for Research: Evidence of academic readiness, motivation, and problem-solving skills.
    2. Feasibility of Project and Timeline: Ability to clearly define scope with realistic goals and an achievable timeline from August through April.
    3. Exigence of Research: Clarity of the research question, its significance, and the strength of the rationale for pursuing the proposed work.
    4. Potential Impact for Student: The extent to which participation in ISUR will meaningfully contribute to the student’s academic, professional, and research development. (Please note that while all students are encouraged to apply, priority will be given to applicants with limited prior research experience and to those who clearly articulate how participation in ISUR will support their academic and professional goals.)
